Midlands Forest Lodge
Midlands Forest Lodge is perched high up on the edge of luscious green hills and slopes. This tranquil and secluded hillside retreat lives up to its name by bordering on the pristine indigenous forest where fauna and flora abound and a natural sanctuary to numerous species of birds exists. At an altitude of 1340m, one can survey the unspoiled beauty of the Midlands Valley from one of 12 well-appointed suites. Utmost care has been taken in making the cozy log cabins blend harmoniously with nature. Enjoy a leisurely walk on the escarpment or, for the more adventurous, explore the forest with its towering giant yellowwood trees.
Three different styles of accommodation are available at Midlands Forest Lodge in the KZN Midlands. The first consists of 8 standard double rooms in timber chalets raised on stilts. Each double room has a king bed (or two single beds depending on your requirement), en suite shower, basin, toilet, reading chairs, and a quaint wooden balcony.
The second style consists of 2 self catering family chalets (each chalet sleeps a max of 4 people). The first bedroom in the chalet has a king bed, and the second bedroom has two single beds. The kitchenette is small but adequate, with bar fridge, microwave, small 2 plate stove, kettle, toaster and other basic necessities. Each bedroom is en suite with shower, basin and toilet. There is a small lounge/dining area and a lovely wooden balcony.
Our third style is more special. We have two chalets in this style. These chalets have a king bed with en suite shower, basin and toilet. There is a large lounge with TV and stunning window views. The chalet also has a small kitchenette for basic self catering with a bar fridge, microwave, small two plate stove, kettle, toaster and other basic necessities.
For safety reasons we do not provide hot blankets, but there are hot water bottles, extra blankets and oil fin heaters in each room for those winter Midlands nights! These log chalets provide a perfect place to contemplate natures beauty in its simplicity, to breathe in the scent of the woods and pure mountain air. There is a communal TV lounge adjoining the reception building for guests needing extra entertainment, and an honesty bar.
Please note, for those wanting breakfast, the lovely breakfast room offers help yourself fresh coffee, tea, juice, fruits, and followed by a plated full English breakfast.
Forest Walks at Midlands Forest Lodge
Midlands Forest Lodge boasts 15 hectares of indigenous mist belt forest – exclusive to this Midlands area. Yellowwood trees of differing varieties are scattered though the forest with some being estimated to be easily over 500 years old. A pair of resident African Crowned Eagles raise a baby every second year in this magnificent setting. Aside from the forest there is a beautiful grassland area which is very endangered in the Midlands with less that 3% natural grassland left. Three different walks are available on the property: two through the forest and one across the grassland. Each walk is approximately 1,5km in length and varying degrees of difficulty from easy to moderate. A non guided walk with a map is available at a minimal conservancy fee. A guided walk is also available by appointment only for an additional fee.
